What is a Food Bank. Home

Simply put, a food bank is a warehouse which distributes food items to charitable organizations. These organizations, in turn, distribute the foods to people at their discretion. The most common recipients are community food pantries, but recipients may include virtually any charitable organization.

Community Food Banks of South Dakota currently operates two food banks: one in Sioux Falls and one in Rapid City. The organization is also affiliated with a nationwide network of Food Banks known as Feeding America. This network distributes food and essential non-food items throughout the nation and is affiliated with dozens of corporate sponsors.
