Each week, the Pierre Wal-Mart destroys between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds of food. This food includes meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables and other perishable items which are nearing their expiration dates but are perfectly safe for consumption. If a food bank is established in Pierre, these foodstuffs will no longer go to the Pierre Regional Landfill. Instead, they will become available to charitable organizations throughout central South Dakota and will help eliminate hunger among those in need. When these items are combined with foods made available by Feeding America, the Pierre Food Bank will make a substantial impact upon hunger throughout central South Dakota.
